The name was quickly shortened to Los Angeles. It wasn't until 1846 that Los Angeles began to grow. This is when the US claimed California and people began to come here. The gold rush caused more unrest even in the southern part of the state. At this time, the lawlessness became so bad that Los Angeles was referred to as Los Diablos or the Devils. In the 1860's the railroads came furthering fueling the influx of settlers. By the turn of the century, oil was found and more settlers came into town. In 1913, when water was piped in from the Owens Valley in Northern California, the population soared, doubling by the 1920's. The war years brought more manufacturing and industry and with it, more people. Los Angeles is a diverse city, ethnically as well as in the business world. Los Angeles has become one of the United State’s major cities and urban centers. It is a leading manufacturing, commercial, transportation, financial and international trade center. All types of manufacturing are found here. Much Aerospace industry is also located in the area. The entertainment industry has broadcasting as well as producing centers in the area as well. Tourism has also become a major part of the Los Angeles economy. There is an extensive system of freeways and major transcontinental and regional railroad lines. Los Angeles International Airport is one of the busiest in the U.S. The port of Los Angeles-Long Beach, on San Pedro Bay, handles more cargo than any other U.S. port on the Pacific Coast.
