Yet its charm and vitality haven't been hidden. Downtown Escondido continues to thrive as a retail and agricultural hub of North San Diego. Escondido has a population of about 122,000 (1998). One of the most appealing aspects of downtown Escondido is the star-gazing, critic raving, trail blazing and amazing California Center for the Arts, which celebrated its fifth anniversary season in 2002. The CCAE features two performance halls, along with a museum. Downtown is also anchored on the northwest by Escondido City Hall where residents and visitors can avail themselves of services or just sit and relax and enjoy some of the new Public Art recently installed throughout Downtown.
